Harry Potter Defenders Houses & Roles

Last checked

Every game of Defenders of Hogwarts has exactly one Dark Arts Player. Everyone else picks one of the four Hogwarts houses. You don't play Harry, Ron or Hermione: you play a house with four pawns.

The four houses

GryffindorSame deck and rules as every other house.
HufflepuffSame deck and rules as every other house.
RavenclawSame deck and rules as every other house.
SlytherinA defender too. It is not the villain side.

The houses are purely cosmetic: identical 7-card starter decks, no special powers. Pick your favourite. Your strategy comes from the cards you buy, not from the house you chose.

The Dark Arts Player

The Dark Arts Player represents Death Eaters and the Dark Forces getting ready for Lord Voldemort's arrival. They start weak, with only white card effects active, and get stronger as House Players replenish and the Dark Arts Path moves into the orange and red zones. The designer has said the game "flips" late, when the Dark Arts Player stops slowing everyone down and starts racing for their own win.

The rulebook suggests giving this role to the most experienced player at first. Reviewers agree that game balance depends a lot on how well it is played. Read the Dark Arts player guide before you take it on.

FAQ

Can you play as Slytherin?

Yes. Slytherin is one of the four houses defending Hogwarts, with the same deck and rules as the other three. The villain role is the separate Dark Arts Player.

Is the Dark Arts Player a hidden traitor?

No. Some news coverage describes a secret role, but the rulebook has the Dark Arts Player chosen openly during setup. There is no hidden identity.

Can you play solo?

No. MinaLima's FAQ confirms there is no solo or co-op mode. The minimum is 2 players: one house against the Dark Arts.

What is the best player count?

The few early votes on BoardGameGeek favour 4 players (3 houses against the Dark Arts). With more houses, there is more competition for the single Dark Detector and the 6 Defence Shields on the map.
