Harry Potter Defenders: Dark Arts Player Strategy

Last checked · Strategy notes are our reading of the official rules

The Dark Arts Player starts weak and gets stronger. Your job in the first half is to slow the houses down and push the clock. In the second half you switch to racing for the target location.

Five things that matter most

  1. Every House replenish moves your marker. Make them replenish more often.
  2. Park pawns on the spaces houses need: the Library, Defence Shield spaces and chokepoints.
  3. Bump the house that is closest to winning, not the nearest pawn.
  4. Treat orange and red cards as movement until their zone unlocks.
  5. Time the Dementor token around where your pawns already are.

1. You control the clock indirectly

The Dark Arts Marker only moves when:

So the best way to speed things up is to make House Players replenish. Stunned House pawns only stand up when their owner replenishes, and houses also replenish whenever their hand runs dry. Anything that costs them cards or stuns their pawns brings your red zone closer.

2. Pawn placement

3. Bumping well

A bump sends a House pawn back to the Great Hall, gives you that house's marker, and once per turn lets you look at 2 Acquire cards and put the better one on top of your deck.

4. Card timing by zone

ZoneYour effectsHow to play it
WhiteWhite onlyGet pawns into position and bump when it's cheap. Play orange and red cards for movement only.
OrangeWhite + orangeEvents get harsher for houses. Start targeting the house with the most items.
RedAllFull power. Pick your Dementor moment and start racing to the target.

5. Events and Progress Tokens

On each Event Space you choose between the event's Dark Arts bonus and that zone's Progress Token. You must hold the zone's token before the marker can move on. If you think the zone has another Event Space ahead, taking the event bonus first and the token later gets you more value. Taking the token now is the safe choice.

6. The Dementor decision

Dark Arts Path at a glance

The marker moves right each time a House Player replenishes (and on some events). ◆ = Event Space.

White zoneToken: Giant
◆◆◆
White card effects active from the start
Orange zoneToken: Acromantula
◆◆◆
Orange effects unlock
Red zoneToken: Dementor
◆3 pawns◆2 pawns◆1 pawn
Red effects unlock
Schematic, not to scale. In the red zone the Dark Arts Player needs 3 pawns on the target if they take the Dementor at the first red event, 2 at the next, and 1 on the final space.
When you take the Dementor tokenPawns needed on the targetTake it when…
First Red Event Space3You already have several pawns in one area of the map.
Next Red Event Space2The houses are still a turn or two from a second shield.
Last space of the path (forced)1No choice. Everyone gets one final hand of 5 cards with no more replenishing.

The target location comes from a 4-card deck, so you won't know where you are going until you draw. Keeping pawns spread around the castle makes any target reachable.

7. The final hand

When the marker reaches the last space, everyone draws up to 5 and can never replenish again. If you need just 1 pawn on the target, count your movement before you play: your 5 cards are all you have left. If nobody wins before the cards run out, the game is a draw.

FAQ

Is the Dark Arts Player overpowered or underpowered?

It depends on the table. Early on, the Dark Arts Player is weak because only white effects work. Reviewers say balance depends heavily on how well the Dark Arts side is played, which is why the rulebook gives it to the most experienced player.

When should I take the Dementor token?

On the first Red Event Space you need 3 pawns on the target, on the next only 2, and on the last space just 1. Take it early when your pawns are already spread across the castle. Wait when the houses are still far from their second shield.

Can the Dark Arts Player win in a 2-player game?

Yes, and bumping is extra strong at 2 players. With only one house, a single bump gives you every House Marker, so each turn you bump also moves the Dark Arts Marker forward.
