Harry Potter Defenders: House Player Strategy
Each Defence Shield needs three items, and you need two shields. That means about six item pickups plus two trips to shield spaces, all before the Dark Arts Path runs out. Efficiency wins.
Five things that matter most
- Every Replenish feeds the Dark Arts clock. Make each one count.
- Collect the three items in parallel, using all three of your pawns.
- Pick up a Hogwarts Token whenever you pass one: it is a free extra move later.
- Climb the Loyalty Track early. It unlocks the Dark Detector and the Room of Requirement.
- Watch the other houses. Only one of you wins.
1. Replenish less, plan more
Replenishing refills your hand to 5 and stands your pawns back up, but it also moves the Dark Arts Marker one space closer to the red zone. Before you replenish, ask whether one more Explore could set up two pickups at once. Cards drawn from Bonus Spaces, Library Books and card effects don't move the marker, so they are the cheapest way to get cards.
2. Spread your pawns across the items
How a Defence Shield is built
Stand on a Defence Shield space holding all three items. Two shields wins the game.
You have three pawns on the map. Give each one a job:
| Item | Plan |
|---|---|
| Parchment Scroll | Look at your 3 secret Location cards and pick the 2 that are closest together. Move two pawns there. You only need 2 of the 3. |
| Library Book | Send your third pawn to the Library. You can only hold one book, so take it when you are ready to use it soon. Its effect resolves straight away. |
| Dark Detector or D.A. Coin | Climb the Loyalty Track. Check which type of shield is closest to your pawns and go for the matching item. |
3. Use Hogwarts Tokens for double turns
Picking up a token is free when you land on its space. On a later turn you return it to take an extra Explore with a card of the same type, on top of your main action. Hold a token that matches the cards you have the most of. Remember: you can only hold one at a time.
4. The Loyalty Track race
- Ways up: end a move on a Dark Detector icon space, play a card that says so, or Learn from the Advanced Acquire Row (discard 2, gain a card and +1 loyalty).
- Reaching space 5 first opens the Room of Requirement. That helps every house, so time it for when your own pawn is close to the room.
- Spending the Dark Detector on a shield drops you back 3 spaces. If no other house is at 5 or higher, the Room of Requirement closes, and any pawn inside is stuck until it reopens.

5. Staying safe from bumps
- A bump sends your pawn back to the Great Hall and costs you several turns of movement. Don't end a move within easy reach of a Dark Arts pawn when you are carrying out a plan.
- Dark Arts pawns can't enter the four Protected Areas (blue shield icon), such as Hagrid's Hut. Park there while you wait. But keep at least one pawn outside, or you can't take the Learn action.
- Ending your move on a Dark Arts pawn stuns both and lets you push theirs to an adjacent space. It's a good way to clear a Defence Shield space, but your pawn stays stunned until you replenish.
- Some House cards can negate a Dark Arts effect that targets you, and cards with a lightning bolt (Reactive Effect) can be played outside your turn. Keep one in hand when you are the leader.
6. Learn: what to buy
- Movement is king. Cards with 2-pawn multi-moves let you advance two item plans in one action.
- Cards that cross obstacles (doors, water and so on) open shortcuts the Dark Arts pawns already enjoy.
- New cards go on top of your draw deck, so buy right before you plan to replenish.
7. Endgame
Once the Dark Arts Player takes the Dementor token, they need 1–3 pawns on a target location. That is your cue to stop helping the other houses and go for your second shield. If the marker reaches the last space, everyone gets one last hand of 5 cards. Count the moves you have left before you start.
FAQ
Should House Players work together?
Only when it helps you. Slowing the Dark Arts Player is good for everyone, but only one house wins. Help early, then race once anyone is close to a second shield.
Is the Dark Detector or the D.A. Coin easier to get?
Usually the D.A. Coin. Once anyone reaches space 5 on the Loyalty Track, the Room of Requirement opens and every house can take a coin. The Dark Detector belongs only to whoever is furthest ahead at space 5 or higher.
Why does my new card not show up?
Acquired cards go face-down on top of your draw deck, so you draw them the next time you draw: on your next Replenish, or earlier through a card effect, Library Book or Bonus Space.
